ITO¯ Jinsai 伊藤仁齋 (1627–1705), Ogyu¯ Sorai 荻生徂徠 (1666–1728) and DAZAI Shundai 太宰春臺 (1680–1747) argued that the Analects can be divided into two ten-chapter sections distinct both formally and philosophically. In the 1683 preface to his Ancient Meanings of the Analects (Rongo kogi 論語古義), Ito¯ argues that the last ten chapters were a later supplement to the first ten, with the substantively unique chapter ten forming a border line territory between them (Kaizuka 1972: 38). His two later followers developed this idea.
