I fear that in the year 1999 it will still be the same. I think it is always unfortunate that, as far as I know, Social Science Departments in Universities and Polytechnics, do not do very much in the way of having some sort of lectures on landscape as part of their training courses. It is not without interest that I remember at Newcastle, certainly for a few years when I was there, the medical school did in fact ask me to give a course of about three or four lectures on landscape and what it could do as far as health was concerned.

Everything conspires to produce symmetry. The aesthetic impact is gained from perceiving this symmetry from a collection of elements which have been arbitrarily disposed in space. Undoubtedly this aesthetic symmetry is created as much by the 'eye of the beholder' as the phenomena of the scene. We choose to set the boundaries of the scene and so make the basic decision as to what is incorporated and what is omitted. We define the frame of reference to suit our aesthetic requirements. In other words, on that winding road in Josselin there is a particular point which we may call the 'aesthetic fix'.
