But little attention has been paid to polysemous words that do not fall into either of the above categories. Liu & Chou  and Chou  conducted a case study of the Mandarin multi-faceted verb [jǐ] and argues that the different uses of jǐ can be viewed as profiling different portions of a base schema. The study is a pioneering work that shows how semantic base and profile can be at work in forming verbal polysemy. In the same vein, this study examined the polysemous verb [fàng] and found that fàng involves a wide range of uses that can be integrated as a natural sequence of motion-initiated, path-related subevents of a base schema.
He stated that “a predication always has a certain scope, and within that scope it selects a particular substructure for designation…. ” [7: 183]. A semantic base functions as a cognitive frame presupposed by a lemma or a set of related lemmas, and semantic profile is the highlight within the lexical base. In other words, a word may encode a concept by profiling a certain aspect of a semantic base. For example, an ‘arc’ is the profile of a ‘circle’, as shown in Figure 1. Another example is the verb ‘arrive’.
