This caused a loss in efficiency and control. The first 247 flew in February 1933. and all 60 were delivered to United Air Lines within a year. Further sales brought the total to 75. These included a special 247A with newly developed 625hp twin-row P&W engines for both domestic and foreign customers. A special In militarized 247Y was sold to a private owner in China. 1934 a 247 was modified for Roscoe Turner and Clyde Pangborn. 247D. Taking lessons from the B-9, the 247*s engines were mounted in nacelles that flowed into the wing. This was an anti-drag advantage that helped the airplane to fly up to 70 miles an hour faster than its competitors. And, as with the Monomail, the landing gear folded neatly into the wings. With such attention paid to the problem of drag, the 247 was the first twin-engined monoplane able to climb on one engine with a full load.
