Brothers marry out (see G. Francillon 1967: 332ff). This case is all the more interesting because it is to the 'Belu' that the Rotinese seem to show the greatest linguistic and cultural affinities. Marriage is not, however, the only means of creating alliances. Various sorts of long-term alliances of a political or ritual nature may also occur among clans or clan segments. Invariably these formal arrangements are attributed to a specific ancestral oath combined with animal sacrifice and possibly the drinking of blood.

On Roti, water resources, for example, are unevenly distributed. The majority of reliable sources for wet rice irrigation are found in the eastern half of the island and many of them occur at a slight elevation along the island's central spine thus creating a reasonable gradient for directing water toward the coast. As a result, east Roti, in comparison with west Roti, is relatively rich in sawah. By contrast, west Roti, 24 James J. Fox which is drier, is noted for its more intensive palm utilisation.

Moreover the Rotinese and Savunese have very different languages and cultures and they responded to European presence in notably different ways. The historical evidence shows that the separate migrations of the Rotinese and Savunese to Timor or Sumba took place at different rates, at different times and for different internal reasons (Fox 1977a: 127—76). Thus it would seem that in dispelling a simplistic view of a complex social process, historical particularities dissolve the possibility of discovering any pattern to this process.
